Ballroom dancing
Ballroom dances of the XX century are based on the European dance styles that on the verge of XIX-XX centuries received a fresh infusion of African and Latin-American dance cultures. In the 1920s a special council on ballroom dances was formed at the Royal dance teachers society in London. The English specialists categorized all dance styles available at the time: waltzes, foxtrots and tango. That gave rise to ballroom dance competitions, and ever since ballroom dancing is divided into two categories: competitive and social dancing. In the 1930-50 the number of standard ballroom dances have increased due to the inclusion of five Latin-American dances: Rumba, Cha-Cha, Jive, Paso Doble and Cha-cha-cha. All ballroom dances are danced in pairs. A pair is made of a gentleman and a lady, connected in special points of contact. In the European style the pair dances closer and the level of contact is preserved throughout the dance. In the Latin-American style the connection between partners is loose, some times inexistent and is usually realized through hands.
